Last night I was deliberating for quite a while as to whether or not I should attend the cherry-blossom-viewing today organised by a friend. I thought I'd decided to go, but when my alarm went off at 9.30 this morning I was still dilly-dallying and toying with the idea of backing out. The idea of going alone just didn't appeal, and I was worried that I wouldn't meet any familiar faces, or friendly new faces... Then it would just suck. So I was contemplating turning off the alarm, rolling over and returning to sleep. Unfortunately (or fortunately), it seems that I have a conscience, and the idea of a no-show despite agreeing to turn up didn't sit well with me. With a groan I detached myself from the magnet of my bed and did the usual wash-up-eat-breakfast routine.
Now that I'm back, the conclusion is that it was better than I thought! Despite the initial awkwardness of so many strangers/acquaintances gathering together, soon people started to mingle and chat. Strangely, despite there being some Japanese present, the predominant languages were English and Mandarin. Good and bad for me, because I can express myself well in English, and decently in Mandarin (I hope), yet on the other hand I didn't get to practice my Japanese much. There were so many Singaporeans there! Didn't really mingle with them since they were on the far end of the circle from where I was sitting, and hey, I'll be mingling with Singaporeans probably for the rest of my life, so there was no need to seek them out. In any case, the people around me were friendly and I felt at ease with them, so I was happy. What made me even happier was that there was a really cute Japanese guy beside me, so I had eye candy! Delicious! :D~~ Haha.
Much as I'd like to see him more in future, I don't like to ask guys for their number, that's too forward for my liking. Some of us exchanged numbers, and one of the girls said that she'll ask us both out sometime, so I'll get to be rude and stare. Or be in a starry-eyed daze. Hahaha. Okay okay, come back to reality, girl! The thing is, I'm still amazed by how I can be in Japan for 6 months and yet have next to no Japanese friends! (Okay fine, I have... two?) Everyone must have been in hiding. Or was I the one in hiding, cooping myself in my room?
Ah well! The bottom line is that I'm glad I went for the gathering. I walked home with a smile on my face and a bounce in my step. I'm happy! :)
