何を言ってるか、do you 明白?
Sunday, 2 March 2008

Yet there are times when both my Japanese and Mandarin fail me, and the other party doesn't understand English - that's when I'm stranded. During the Okinawa trip I was thinking and speaking in three languages, but I've realised the importance of being proficient in every language. There's no point being a jack of all trades but master of none. Up till now, I've always had a second language to fall back on with the people I talk to. Apart from japanese, with Niki I've mandarin and english, with Yoon Jeong I've english. I never had the problem of not being able to express myself until I met the other international students on the trip. Suddenly there were so many people with whom the only common language is japanese. My command of japanese isn't sufficient for me to talk in-depth about topics like relationships and dreams. Maybe I get 70% of the conversation, but I'm only able to express 40% of what I'm thinking. At times like these, it was better for me to just keep quiet lest I unintentionally say things that sound stupid. Considering that I've some blood ties to the japanese culture, it is embarrassing sometimes that I'm not better at the language.

Much as it is difficult, I'm glad I now have someone to chat with in japanese on msn. Maybe with more practice I'll pick up more grammar and vocabulary and be better able to express myself. Before the trip I had the thought that "I want to go to a japanese school!" There was the urge to be really good at japanese but I don't really think I'll be coming back to Japan for a while after I leave in July, so I'd better make the most of having Japanese friends, a Japanese mom, and international friends who speak fluent Japanese. I will work harder! I must!
