Before I went to bed last night, I was wondering - why do we dream? Amazingly, when I popped awake naturally after four hours of sleep, I actually remembered the question, so I went to google it. There are a number of sites that go into theoretical detail about rapid eye movement (REM) and expectation fulfilment. While informative, they were rather dry, and there is no definitive answer as to why we dream, only the fact that we do. I much prefer sites like this which veer away from the scientific aspect, and instead delve into interpretation of our dreams. It was such an interesting read, in part because the writer's style appealed to my sense of humour. I never knew that many people perpetually dream about teeth falling out, and trying in vain to stuff the teeth back in, or to keep them from falling out! I'm weird, but I started laughing when I read that, because the image in my mind was so funny! There were many examples of symbols and all, and some pointers for us to interpret our dreams. Maybe I should try keeping a dream journal. Not particularly because I want to interpret my dreams to find out more about myself, although that would be nice, but because it may be interesting in the future to look back and read about the ridiculous stuff I dream about. Just last night I was dreaming about going to a Krispy Kreme doughnut outlet because my friend (Jermy, it was you!) works there, and I was told by my parents to buy twenty doughnuts - for them, myself, and my uncle. And I'd decreed that seven to ten of those twenty doughnuts would be mine. =p
